Hunting Cape Buffalo is one of the most dangerous, challenging and exciting hunting experiences a person can have. They are stalked on foot and normally initial contact with the animal will be quite close. The thrill of getting ‘danger close’ gets the adrenaline going. Cape Buffalo are one of the most difficult species to bring down due to their tough exteriors, solid muscle and their overall size. Hunters should be prepared for this hunt to go on for some time after the initial encounter as Cape Buffalo are known to retreat to thick bush after coming in contact with hunters. The Cape Buffalo can weigh 500 to 1,000 kg (1,100 to 2,200 lb), with males normally larger than females. They are primarily grazers, however, an occasional browser and must drink water on a daily basis. They favor the thick bush during the day and normally graze while moving. Cape Buffalo hunting is by far the most popular of all dangerous game hunting in Africa today.
The minimum caliber to hunt Cape Buffalo is a .375, and often larger calibers are used when hunting these dangerous animals.
